Landscape lighting on paver patio and walkway in Sussex County Delaware

Landscape Lighting Design & Installation in Sussex County, DE

LED path lights, architectural uplighting, pool lighting, and smart controls that extend your outdoor space into the evening hours. Installed during construction or added to existing landscapes.

Professional Landscape Lighting Makes the Difference

Professional landscape lighting transforms how your outdoor space looks and functions after dark. Without it, your pool, patio, outdoor kitchen, and landscaping effectively disappear at sunset. With a well-designed lighting system, your backyard becomes an evening destination that is safe to navigate, beautiful to look at, and comfortable to spend time in.

At Just Imagine Hardscapes & Pools, we install landscape lighting as an integrated part of our outdoor living projects. When lighting is planned alongside your patio, pool, or kitchen build, wiring runs beneath pavers and through walls during construction rather than being surface-mounted or trenched through finished landscapes after the fact. The result is a cleaner installation with no visible wires, conduit, or retrofit compromises.

We also install lighting on existing properties where hardscaping is already in place. Low-voltage LED systems require minimal trenching and can be added to mature landscapes with very little disruption.

Types of Landscape Lighting We Install

Each lighting type serves a different purpose. We layer multiple types together to create depth, safety, and ambiance across your entire property.

Path & Walkway Lights

Low-profile fixtures that illuminate walkways, driveways, and transitions between outdoor zones. Path lights provide safe navigation while defining the borders of your patio, pool deck, and garden beds. Available in stake-mount and hardscape-mount configurations.

Uplighting & Downlighting

Uplights positioned at the base of trees, columns, and architectural features create dramatic vertical illumination. Downlights mounted in trees or structures cast a natural moonlight effect over seating areas. The combination creates depth and visual interest.

Accent & Spot Lighting

Focused beams that highlight specific features: a specimen tree, a water feature, a stone wall texture, or an outdoor kitchen island. Accent lights draw the eye to the most interesting elements of your landscape and create focal points at night.

Pool & Water Feature Lighting

Submersible LED lights built into pool walls, waterfalls, and fountains. Color-changing options let you set the mood for evening swims and gatherings. Pool lighting is installed during pool construction or retrofitted into existing pools with compatible niches.

Step & Wall Lights

Recessed fixtures built into retaining walls, seating walls, stair risers, and pilaster columns. These lights improve safety on elevation changes while adding a subtle glow to vertical hardscape surfaces. Wiring is run inside the wall during construction.

String & Bistro Lights

Overhead string lights create a warm, casual atmosphere over dining areas, pergolas, and outdoor kitchens. We install permanent mounting points and weather-rated wiring so string lights stay up year-round without sagging or deteriorating.

LED Technology & Energy Efficiency

We install exclusively LED landscape lighting. LED fixtures consume 75 to 80 percent less energy than halogen bulbs, produce almost no heat, and last 40,000 to 50,000 hours before needing replacement. For a typical Sussex County landscape lighting system with 15 to 25 fixtures, the difference in annual energy costs is significant.

Low-voltage LED systems (12V) are the standard for residential landscape lighting. They are safe to install, efficient to operate, and compatible with dimming controls and color-changing features. The transformer connects to a standard 120V outdoor outlet and steps down the voltage to 12V for the entire fixture circuit.

  • 75-80% less energy consumption than halogen
  • 40,000 to 50,000 hour bulb lifespan (10+ years of typical use)
  • Low-voltage 12V systems for safe, efficient operation
  • Warm white (2700K) for natural ambiance or cool white for modern aesthetics
  • Color-changing RGB options for pools and accent features
  • Marine-grade fixtures rated for coastal salt air exposure

Smart Controls & Automation

Modern landscape lighting systems include controls that go well beyond a simple on/off switch. We install transformers with built-in timers, photocells, and Wi-Fi connectivity so you can manage your lighting from your phone, set automated schedules, and adjust brightness without walking to a control box.

Smart-enabled transformers let you create lighting zones: path lights on at dusk, pool lights on a separate schedule, accent lights triggered manually when entertaining. Dimming capability lets you set different brightness levels for different occasions. Some homeowners run a bright security-level setting when away and a softer ambient setting when hosting.

  • Wi-Fi-enabled transformers controlled via smartphone app
  • Photocell sensors for automatic dusk-to-dawn operation
  • Programmable timers for zone-specific schedules
  • Dimming controls for adjustable brightness levels
  • Integration with home automation systems

How We Design Landscape Lighting

Effective landscape lighting is about what you do not see as much as what you do. The goal is to light the landscape, not show the fixtures. We design systems where the light source is hidden and the illuminated surface is the focus.

Our design process starts with a walkthrough of your property at dusk to identify the features worth highlighting, the paths that need illumination, the dark spots that compromise safety, and the views from inside your home that benefit from exterior lighting. We then plan fixture placement, type, beam angle, and brightness for each zone.

Key principles we follow in every landscape lighting design:

  • Layer lighting types: Combine path, accent, up, and down lighting for depth rather than relying on one type.
  • Hide the source: Position fixtures behind plants, inside walls, or at angles where the housing is not visible from normal viewing positions.
  • Avoid over-lighting: More fixtures does not mean better. Subtlety creates atmosphere; too much light creates a commercial look.
  • Plan for maintenance: Fixtures should be accessible for bulb changes and angle adjustments without disassembling hardscape.
  • Use consistent color temperature: Mixing warm and cool white fixtures in the same zone creates visual dissonance.
